In celebration of Black History Month, Theballerlife.com ran across an interesting story we would like to share with you.
We would like for you to meet 97-year-old Gertrude Jeanette,New York City’s first female cab driver.
Our friend Antwan Lewis over at “My Fox New York” sat down with Ms. Jeanette for exclusive interview on her historic milestone.
Lewis reports:
“She got her license in 1942. She hid the fact that she was a woman by putting her hair up and wearing no make-up, but she couldn’t hide that she was an African-American. She says she had to battle racism on the job.
Jeanette only worked as a NYC cabbie for seven years before moving on to her other passion, theater.
She joined the American Negro Theatre Workshop and became a leading lady for legendary playwright Tennessee Williams.
She eventually founded Harlem’s acclaimed Hadley Players.”
