Meet Candace Ford, wife of newly retired NBA star T.J. Ford. Recently, we had the pleasure of speaking with Mrs. Ford about being the wife of a NBA star, motherhood, and entrepreneurship.

Check out the interview below:

BW: How did you and T.J. meet?

CF: I met T.J. in Austin at the Texas relays. Having gone to the relays for years as a participant I was able to fully enjoy the events as a spectator along with several friends. While hanging out later that night, all of my friends spent most of the time on the dance floor. As it got later I was tired and ready to head back home, unable to find any of my friends, I decided to head back to the bar area and as I was walking a guy touched my hand and proceeded to speak. We talked briefly and exchanged numbers. Despite being alone with him and a bunch of his friends I felt at ease in his presence.

BW: How long did you two date before getting married?

CF: From the day we met we frequently talked over the phone and eventually dated until six years later while celebrating my birthday, T.J. proposed to me… and the rest is history. I feel like our love was kismet due in part to how a casual outing put me in the path of the man that would become my husband.

BW: When did you get married and how was your special wedding day?

CF: As cliché as it may sound, my wedding day was a day I will always remember. It feels like it was just yesterday. June 10, 2011, the day I married my best friend, my lover, and my soul mate that God gave to me. I’d long dreamt of a beachfront wedding and sharing that day with the people dearest to us. This is what we treasure most. We decided to have our wedding at the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas at the One and Only Cloisters.

BW: How many kids do you have and what are their ages?

CF: T.J. and I reside in Houston, TX with our 6 1/2 year old son, 2 1/2 year old daughter and expecting our third child this summer.

BW: Do you have any business ventures or projects in the works?

CF: I am full-time entrepreneur. I own an Ambulatory Company and a Tax Preparation business in Houston.

BW: What is your educational background?

CF: I have two degrees under my belt, a BS in Chemistry and a Masters in Economic Development and Entrepreneurship.

BW: Are you involved in any charities or foundations?

CF: I am President of the Non-Profit organization My I.N.C. (My Innocence Never Compromised), and am also a member of Behind the Bench: The National Basketball Wives Association.

In addition to my devotion to my family, I am also concerned about many of the issues that young women face today. I decided to start my mission to help young girls improve their quality of life. My focus was to create a “movement” that is inclusive of young women in all communities to ensure they lead purposeful, active, healthy and responsible lives. I am extremely excited to be a part of My I.N.C. Foundation where I am President. More can be achieved for girls by organizations working together.

BW: How do you juggle being a full time mother and entrepreneur?

CF: My top priorities are being a wife and mother. I am a mother who cooks, cleans, and at home literally taking care of business making sure the house stays in order while my husband is on the road.

BW: How is it being the wife of famous NBA star? Is it difficult?

CF: So many people have perceptions about how it is to be the wife of an NBA player, but I know from experience that it is a lot of work. It is so much more than the material things that people see and seem to focus on. You have to be a strong woman to hold it down for your family and your business.

As a wife you have to be the backbone, especially for your husband who is under pressure with his career. You can’t let the NBA life define who you are and you can’t lose yourself in their career, which is why I stay active.

My relationship with God shows me how to be that positive wife and mother. Staying grounded is what keeps sanity in my house. Now I look forward to my life after the NBA.

T.J. Ford played 9 years in the NBA. He was selected eighth overall by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2003 NBA Draft. Ford played for several teams including: Milwaukee Bucks (2003–2006), Toronto Raptors (2006–2008), Indiana Pacers (2008–2011), KK Zagreb (Croatia 2011), San Antonio Spurs(2011–2012).

Two months ago, Ford retired from the NBA following a medical scare to his surgically repaired spine, which once sidelined him for an entire NBA season. Ford told reporters that lying motionless March 7th on the court against the New York Knicks wasn’t the first time it had happened, and he decided to walk away while he still had a chance.
