Meet Kim Singletary, wife of retired NFL star turned coach Mike Singletary. Mike and Kim met while they were college students at Baylor University.
One day, Kim, a college freshman, was looking for a place to study in a crowded library. Mike, a sophomore and star on the football team, had all of his books covering a large table. Kim asked if she could sit. Mike was sure she had come to flirt. Kim had no idea who he was. Mike was sure she was fawning over his football prowess. Kim, who was struggling in calculus, noticed the problems he was working on and asked for help. Mike, who was actually doing business math but confidently offered to tutor her in calculus, was still sure she was trying to flirt. Every since that special day in the library, the couple has been together.
The couple had a long courtship because Kim’s parents were concerned about the social implications of their interracial union. “We would go for a walk almost every night,” Mrs. Singletary told the Chicago Tribune of her days at Baylor. “Finally, I realized, the more I thought about a husband, that Mike had every quality I wanted and I thought, ‘Maybe I’m in love with him.’ It was kind of scary. But we stayed together.”
The couple married in 1985. They have 7 children together.
Mike Singletary is the current head coach for the NFL San Francisco 49ers. Before he became the coach of the 49ers in 2008, he spent his entire playing career as a linebacker for the Chicago Bears. Singletary was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the 2nd round of the 1981 NFL Draft. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1998.
