In a surprise announcement, President Obama is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009. The Nobel Peace Prize has been given to U.S. President Barack Obama for his calls to reduce the world’s stockpile of weapons and working for world peace.
The first African American to hold his country’s highest office, Obama has called for disarmanent and worked to restart the stalled Middle East peace process since taking office in January. The prize worth 10 million Swedish crowns (USD 1.4 million) will be handed over in Oslo at a ceremony on December 10th, 2009.
